A 4 man group of us just returned from our first trip to the BWCA. Used Sawbill Outfittters, EP 37, Lady Chain Loop. It was amazing but unfortunately I planned a much more arduous route for our group than expected. We had a 5 day trip and 17 portages (the longest almost a mile). This left much less time for fishing (our main goal) and more time than desired for traveling/portaging.
Looking for recommendations for a base camp type trip next year (same duration of days) with less portaging. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I also posted this on BWCA.com. Just looking for maximum input.

I love entering at EP 55 to go through Sag-Ottertrack-Knife. You can stick to the big lakes or take short portages for day trips through Amoeber-Topaz-Cherry or Ester-Hanson.

OK. I suggest you go out of Ely. Use Canoe Country Outfitters. Enter Lake One - EP30F - and head to Insula. Then loop up through popular lakes - not crowded in fall - and back into Snowbank. Easy and inexpensive shuttle to Lake One EP. You'll put in some miles but no tough portage's like last year. Classic BWCAW lakes. Reportedly great fishing (I don't fish). Great sites.
My 2 cents.
