Has anyone been out in the backcountry this past month or so? I am planning a 3 day portage backcountry trip in Algonquin (May 31-June 1), and am wondering how bad the black flies are right now. I'm contemplating bringing my 4 legged companion (sheppard/husky mix) with me on this trip, but am worried we will get eaten alive by bugs. Any advice out there?

We came out on the 23rd from Clydegale, Pen, Rock. We spent our last night at the campsite on Pen closest to the portage to Rock (not recommended - see my campsite review). Black flies were coming out. On the trip out on Rock, there some places where we ventured a little closer to shore and got attacked. I thought the take-out would be murder but there were none - much to our delight. So, I'd say the hatches were fairly localized. You should be right in the thick of them - sorry.
