I had never tried using the quick reply before. Upgrading the forum to the latest version would probably fix it (among other problems). I been putting it off, though, since I made some customizations that I'll have to put back in again. Thanks for letting me know. I wonder if I can disable it in the meantime...

Tried to "quick reply" a post earlier, site timed out. So I tried to reload the page, timed out again. One last try, still no success. So I closed the page and re-opened the topic, and the reply was posted 3 times.
