Ive only been to the Boundry Waters once 15 years ago and trip was cut short so didnt get to enjoy it. Wanting to plan a trip and looking for the best time to go if I wanted to do some fishing while on my trip?

This is just in general: May - Fishing opener. Before Memorial Day, generally few if any bugs because it is cold. You never really know what the temperature could be. Ice could still be on the lakes. This year, I think, is going to be an especially late ice-out since we are still getting sub-zero temperatures. June - Usually considered the best fishing, but bugs can be horrendous. July to August - Bugs slowly taper off, and so does the fishing. These are the two most popular months to go. September - Can be warm, can be cold. Fewer people after Labor Day.

My group has enjoyed the last week of August. It can still get pretty warm, the bugs are waaaay down, fishing is still really good, and the crowds are down. We come out the Saturday of Labor Day weekend...when more people are going in!

Good advice given above.
But, fishing can be good at any given time. What other interests or goals do you have for your trip? Once identified, these may actually be more significant as to when you should go.

Thanks everyone. Fishing is part of the trip mainly because I love to fish so much. But I am also looking forward to getting back into canoe tripping, fishing is just an added bonus.

I've always gone in May/early June and late August/September. All my trip reports are available on this site, if you'd like to check them out. But since I don't fish, they may not be a lot of use to you.
