I really like this site. I debated between 3 and 4 stars and ultimately decided to round up to 4. The campsite is hard to get to. You have to take part of the 1-mile portage, paddle underneath some logging remnants (looked like some type of contraption to shuttle supplies over the river), go down some swift water (great fishing here), and take another portage around a couple of rapids (and the portage is not shown on most maps). The campsite is right on the last set of rapids on the middle of the portage. It feels very remote, even this close to Basswood Falls. It is surrounded by red and white pines. It looked like good fishing above and below the rapids (I didn't try), and there is a trail that goes all the way back to the swift water (where I know the fishing was good). There are a couple of issues with the site. First, the rapids are loud. If that bothers you, you might not like the site. Second, watch out for poison ivy. There was a lot among the rocks along the shore (should be OK in the campsite itself, though). Third, since it takes a lot of effort to get to, if it is taken, it takes some effort to get back. Admin Note: The number and locations of campsites in and around the Basswood Falls portage were confusing based on the maps that I had and the existing campsite reviews. The reviews implied that there was a campsite missing on Paddle Planner, so I added it. However, when I explored the area, I found out that there was not a missing campsite; instead, all the maps had the campsites in the wrong locations. I have corrected the locations of the campsites, removed the "extra" campsite, and associated the reviews with the correct campsites. There are four campsites along the portage and two on the northern peninsula. One of the northern campsites can be reached from the portage; the other requires paddling.

This is on a rapids that is LOUD! No fishing at camp must go onto river below. There are some large pines here but swimming, fishing, quiet at camp are out.
