Agree with donr - on the east end, takeout closer to the falls is easier, but there's not a huge difference (both takeouts are cairned). Nothing too complex here other than some elevation................... Edit to add: Matt, you made it to this portage and back out in ONE DAY?!?! Epic. I was flying (singling) and got from MX Hat Lake to the Leano parking lot in 5:50 - one way! You day was over 45km!

When starting from the south, I would recommend using the take out to the east of the more clearly marked main take out. This allows you to skip crossing the secondary stream, which can be sketchy in high water.

I'm not sure if this trail has been maintained since the RED03 fires of 2016. If not, it could be a difficult portage. UPDATE: It hasn't. In 2022 this portage was a lot of work, we traveled from Jake to Mexican Hat. It's navigable but don't expect a highway! See photos.

As part of a day trip into WCPP, I cleared this portage with a handsaw in May 2021 and marked it with orange flagging tape. The standing burned deadfall is still coming down and the small jack pine are getting taller, so this will be an ongoing issue for this path.
