I decided to skip this portage, but ended up at a beaver dam. I was still getting my wilderness legs on me and decided it felt a little tricky disembarking at the dam (water looked deep) so I turned around and did this portage which deposits you upstream of the dam. easy and short. no problem.

Even in much lower water, there is currently no need for this portage other than perhaps to get out and stretch your legs from the fairly long paddle in either direction.

The group in front of us portaged and we turned right and paddled. We finished just in front of them. Either way, it's an easy little jaunt through.

The two portages between Square Lake and Kawasachong lake are unnecessary, even in low water conditions of fall 2020. So between Kawasachong and Kawishiwi, you have a big pull over/1 rod portage beaver dam going just west of Kawas going to Square, and small beaver dam pullover going south of Square to Kawish. Fact.

During our August trip, the water was high enough to continue paddling through the marsh. You will need to navigate over a couple beaver dams but nothing more than a quick jump out and pull over. Beautiful forest rejuvenation area.

This portage isn't required anymore, but there are 2 other beaver dams farther upriver.

The first portage heading north out of Kawishiwi Lake offers easy landings on both sides. Enjoy the easy start to your trip!
