Indeed, it is steep. Focus on your breathwork and make sure you have water available when you reach the end. It's not the worst steep portage I've done (Cherry-Hanson is worse I think) but this one is certainly as advertised.

Heading north is the way to do this one. I was sure glad we went downhill!

Very happy we were heading out of Steep because this portage certainly holds up to the lakes name...

Coming into Steep this thing felt like a beast. The footing is rough and it is up hill. Thankfully it is shorter. 4/5

The trail had been completely washed out and destroyed by a heavy deluge a few days before. Rocks, gullies, and difficult footing. Per Superior National Forest Service, the trail was reworked in 2015, but is in need of constant repair due to being prone to washout in heavy rains.

Decent landings. A fairly tough up & over coming from South. Seen some fresh wolf scat going back over for my second load.

This portage is a steady climb for the first 3/4 of the trail going to Steep Lake. The trail is maintained well and has solid footing. The landings are also in good shape at both ends.
