Hell portage. Due to low water levels the entirety of the channel from Section Three Pond to Slim was impassible via canoe. We had to bushwhack through the bog from the bottom of Pond before we could join the established portage–which covered the final third of the trek. Insult to injury was time wasted looking for a landing on Section Three Pond. My Voyageur map indicated a 51-rod portage from the SW corner of Pond to Slim. This doesn't exist in reality. We ended up having to portage the entire 130 rod distance.

Coming from the south, you'll want to take the inverse approach of that described in the previous comments. As soon as things get mucky, probably best to put the boat in and pole your way along: there's limited stability in this mudpit of a stream/streambank. Was still about 60-70 rods.

I echo everything Bioteachk said - when coming from the north - paddle as far into the stream as you can and then look for the portage. In fall of 2021, we easily doubled the length of the marked 35 rods.

This one is tricky depending on the water level. 2021 was a dry year, and we basically paddled to the far south side of section 3 pond and looked for the portage takeout on the west side as shown on the map. We couldn't find any portage access in the swamp so we carefully navigated the stream toward Slim. We were able to navigate 2/3 of the way down the stream before the water levels became too low for the canoe. We exited west and found the portage along that side of the pond. From this vantage it was clear there are multiple takeouts on the west side for the portage, but they are not always very visible. Basically, paddle as far south as you can and then look for the portage trail on the west side of the stream.

Very rocky. Footing is tricky. It seems like a natural spring comes out at the Section 8 side because the water is so cold. Lots of mushroom varieties along the way. 2/5
