Fairly rough footing, but definitely the easier of the two Ashdick portages.

This portage begins practically on a campsite, with only a small inlet isolating the two. It is a fairly flat winding journey over into Ashdick. Cool geology on both sides as mentioned in the Pauly guidebook. We found little evidence that this portage had been used much during the summer. On the Ester side multiple trails exist, but they all seemed to lead to the correct area in the center.

Decent landings on both ends. The landing on Ester is a stones throw south from the campsite. Nothing overly extraordinary about this trail. It's mostly level with a few minor rises along the way, rocks, roots and a few small mud holes.

A fairly typical portage for this area portion of the BWCA. It climbs somewhat steeply above the northeast shore of Ester Lake then descends a little more gradually to the southern edge of Ashdick Lake.
