Yes it is steep. I'd rather do a mile flat portage than a short steep one like this. Be careful and take your time.

Not a bad portage all - just somewhat steep running down from Brule to Vernon. Not very wide but easy to find. Runs parallel to creek and nice waterfalls.

Because of the steepness, it felt two or three times as long as it really was. My legs were burning by the end. The Vernon landing is just wide enough to get a canoe in lengthwise, but some logs made getting out somewhat difficult (back up, turn, back up, turn, etc.). The Brule end can really depend on the waves. If the waves are coming in, your canoe can be smashed against a few rocks. There are definitely worse landings out there, though.

Huh. May be steep. No kidding! With the fresh snow, this portage felt like a ski hill. It was my turn with the canoe, and I ate it more than once. Ended up dragging it over the snow to get up one of the hills after a good fall. Real pretty all the same.

This trail climbs VERY steeply out of Vernon! The rock face can be slippery when wet. There is a spur trail (NE side) at about the halfway point leading back to an enchanting waterfall. This waterfall can also be reached from camp #973.

Watch your step as there is great elevation change on this portage. Be sure and check out the falls to the east.
