Mushy/weedy landing on Duncan. While nothing overly steep, the trail is a long succession of short gradual climbs which deceptively wear you down. The beaver pond in the middle was dried up and offered uneventful passage. The second half of the trail was literally choked with overhanging thimbleberry leaf's. (The most overgrown trail I've come across) Still the path was quite obvious. There were several old growth pines and impressive cedars just off the trail near the Duncan end.

I did this portage with a friend in 2011. It was my 2nd trip to BWCA. At that time I felt it was a difficult trip even though were using a inflatable canoe. We deflated the canoe into a backpack and carried it. My memory is not very clear but I remember us talking about it later and thinking how much more difficult it would have been if we had a regular canoe. We had to walk through a 6 foot swampy stretch but otherwise the footing was reasonably solid. We camped in Partridge lake with a desire for a remote site. The change in elevation is mostly gradual and though it is not a very difficult portage but I would recommend caution. Suggest carrying canoe first and then luggage. Keep spare hands and energy for when things get a little tiring.
