This portage climbs a bit from Ham before leveling off and coming to a marshy landing on the other side. It's a beautiful transition into the wilderness area.

This portage is easy. Some stairs to climb, but it is wide and flat otherwise. On the way in to the BWCA, we made the mistake of going to a "portage" to the east where the creek enters the lake. DO NOT DO THIS!! There was a short trail, so I was tricked into believing it was the portage. It brought us to the creek, and we went up it. Then there was another short portage on the east side of the creek. We decided to skip the second portage and line the canoe up the creek. Exhausted, we started paddling again, and lo and behold, on our right we see the nice, big, portage landing. We took the official portage on the way back out.

Very easy to notice when on Ham. Enjoyable because you actually enter the BWCA on this portage. Slightly uphill, with a few stairs, going into Cross Bay. 2/5

Short portage with minor hill. You can take a picture with the "Entering BWCA" sign about 1/4 way through.

This portage is easy, nice take out on Ham Lake side. Put-in is OK, a bit muddy perhaps. The portage is further west than is shown on some maps. Just start looking for it a bit earlier, you will see it.
