I came through here early in the morning, seeing my first other person on this chain camping at Battle. After trying to fight my way down the creek between Battle and Saca, I found myself back here to start the worst portage of the chain. This portage is an awful swamp of a spot. The Battle end is a bog. Mucky and murky. After ascending out of the bog, the trail all but disappears. The portage is overgrown to the point of bushwhacking through chest deep brush. I fought my way through here, taking care to make lots of noise. So much moose scat, and all I wanted to avoid was an angry mother moose in the swamp. After fighting through the swamp and the thicket, I was rewarded with a garbage landing on the Hassel end. There is a nice rocky drop off into a couple inches of water. The proper dismount is a toss of the canoe off of the short cliff and then drag it through the mud for 20 ft or so until you hit open water. At least both lakes are aptly named, as this portage is both a hassle and a battle! Good luck. This portage sucks.
