This description is about two portages. There is an 80 rod portage from Forest Road 200 to Astrid Lake. There is also a 120 rod portage from Forest Road 200 to Maude Lake. ASTRID LAKE PORTAGE - It's a slightly downhill jaunt of 80 rods. Entire portage is like walking on a gravel path. Along the portage, you will see many massive red, white, and jack pines. A little boardwalk goes over a small brook about halfway thru. This trail is free of large rocks or roots - about as easy of an 80 rodder as you'll ever find going to the lake. The landing is wide and flat with a beautiful white pine there to greet you. The portage is a little challenging going back to the road as you're going uphill, but not excruciating by any means. Very scenic portage. Wider than your typical BWCA portage. MAUDE LAKE PORTAGE - Slightly downhill to Maude Lake, but there is some elevation changes on the first half of the portage. Use far less than Astrid Lake portage. Mostly grass with some rock/gravel and ruts (looks to be from ATV use). The last 30 or so rods are a breeze as it's flat and opens up to a wonderful western view of the lake. Plenty of room to put in your canoe at the landing.
