I did a trip through that area last June. It's always interesting to revisit a (somewhat recent)trip through someone else's eyes. We did the Big Rice ~ Hook portage. Finding the Big Rice end was very difficult to locate too. There was a rock cairn on the Hook end, but, i'm sure the high water hid portions of the trail. I know the trail skirted a large swamp near Hook lake. The pink lady slipper brought back memories too. There was a particularly high density of them along the Hook ~ Big Rice portage. Did you find the message jar near the Keneu Lake campsite? Anyways, great report and thanks for taking the time to share your adventure.

Yes, the portage trail skirted the swamp - we just went on the wrong side of the swamp. I figured it out halfway through, but by then it was too late to quickly correct our course. I looked up some comments about the portage after the trip. Apparently the maps mark the start of the portage in the wrong spot. Knowing that beforehand would have helped. I forgot about the message jar at the Keneu campsite. If I had remembered, I would have looked for it. Despite all of the rain, we had fun. It was better than being at work :)
