Ash Tree

Fraxinus spp.
Ash, not unlike Oak and Maple, is only found in the BWCA when the correct combination of soil and climate exist. Green Ash is an incredibly common tree in the Southern part of the state, but not so often found in the North. Black Ash isn't particularily common anywhere. Both are found in the BWCA, but very rarely. One place I can think of that is dominated by Ash is Cattyman falls. The falls and the steep canyon create a microclimate that is warmer and with richer soil than the surrounding landscape allowing Ash to thrive there.
I found a bunch of black ash on the Monumnet Portage on the eastern end in that marshy area.
