Tamarack
Larix laricina

Tamarack, or Eastern Larch as it is sometimes known, is an incredibly unique species. It is a deciduous conifer meaning that it turns gold and loses its needles each winter. It has an incredbily wide range, growing from Maine to Alaska. In the BWCA, it is commonly a lowland species, growing alongside Black Spruce around bogs and marshes. It is rarely a large tree, but fits into a niche where it has little competition from other species. It can be found throughout the BWCA and can be easily identifed by the soft foliage that is growing in clusters from stalks on the branches. My absolute favorite Tamarack are growing along the Wawiag River in the Quetico.

For more information, check out the USDA profile of the species here.
